Are we there yet???
Oh, that perennial question: Are we there yet? No. No, we are not there yet. Of all the life lessons we have to learn, this is among the hardest because it implies an end, a conclusion, a moment when something is final, done, period, there! And now that we've settled that, it's fixed, it's right and we don't have to deal with it anymore.
No. We are not there yet. Of course, you've guessed that I'm not talking about grandma's house.
We so often mistake a change for a solution. If we can just get money out of politics, then campaigns will be better. If we can get rid of nuclear weapons, we'll be safe from each other's aggressions. If we can topple the patriarchy, sexual harassment will stop. Nope. People will still look for a way to influence or battle or dominate others. It's what people do. You might as well ask oaks to stop dropping acorns or whales to walk on land.
What I want you to understand is this: You live in a flow. Life flows. There is no perfection. No solution, no leader, no job, no language, no destination will put an end to it (whatever "it" is) once and for all. We will always move on to a new next thing. It might be better. It might be worse. It might be familiar or exciting or scary or wonderful. It might feel just perfect, or as if it can't get any worse. Whatever it feels like, it will change. Wherever there is, it's temporary.
So, don't sweat the small stuff, work to bring about positive change in your life and community when you don't like what's going on, and most definitely enjoy life's gifts and pleasures whenever you can. Embrace every step of the journey as you flow along.
And, don't rush it, because sooner or later, we'll all get there.
